Delight is a charitable co-op design initiative that creates a sustainable solution for woman’s monthly period and more awareness of Menstrual Health Management. With our tomorrow and new generations staked in the hands of woman, this project revives/rejuvenates the electricity in the woman that lights up the futures general wellbeing, health and hygiene.
In Uganda, all around, you see that many girls do not have decent material such as tampons or sanitary towels at their disposal. They use clothes or sometimes even grass or newspaper to stop the bleeding. They are afraid they will smell or leak, so they stay at home.
Motivation:
Despite nearly half the world’s population (females) experiencing menstruation on a monthly basis, it is often left undiscussed. However, lack of access to sanitary products often dubbed period poverty can have far-reaching and lasting effects on women and young girls, affecting mental health, confidence, and economic empowerment, among other factors. Alternatives to disposal sanitary pads are increasingly common, such as reusable pads or a menstrual cup, which provide cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable options to manage menstruation. Source Reusable Sanitary Pads assessment report by USAID. January 2021.
In the same report, when asked about materials they or a female household member preferred for Menstrual health management, 64% indicated reusable sanitary pads, 31% disposable sanitary pads, 4% old clothes, and 1% other. In practice, it appears that women who switch from disposable sanitary pads to washable sanitary pads suffer less from itching and fungal infections.
These facts and desire for reusable pads among other concerns like environment protection and sustainable use of resources form the back ground of De-Light program.
Working together is the key to develop awareness and to maintain a good hygiene. To gain the goal of DE-LIGHT we build essential networks and platforms to equip women and girls through doing this for each other and keep the awareness and hygiene high.
